Build Safer, Smarter Vehicles with Thermal Cameras to Meet AEB Standards
Teledyne FLIR OEM thermal camera modules are transforming vehicle autonomy and safety. We have equipped more than one million vehicles with thermal sensors for night vision systems that enhance driver perception in challenging lighting conditions. We provide proven, mature technology to help OEMs meet new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) regulations for Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems. By detecting pedestrians, animals, and other obstacles beyond the reach of headlights and through glare and most fog, our thermal cameras play an invaluable role in preventing accidents and saving lives. Our commitment to innovation, automotive-quality systems, production scale, and road safety makes us the go-to partner for automotive manufacturers worldwide.

Benefits of Teledyne FLIR Thermal Cameras on ADAS and Autonomous Vehicles
SAFETY
Thermal cameras see through a wide variety of conditions including darkness, sunlight, headlight glare, shadows, and most fog 24 hours a day. They are especially good at detecting pedestrians, bicyclists, large animals, and other vulnerable road users.
SMARTER
Thermal imagery fills the performance gaps where existing vision sensors are challenged. They offer redundancy as well as complement existing visible sensors, radar, and LIDAR to improve detection and classification algorithms through multispectral sensor fusion.
SECURE
Teledyne FLIR OEM is the global leader in thermal camera quality and production. Providing the only US-manufactured, automotive-qualified thermal sensor that has been installed on nearly a million passenger vehicles.
Thermal-Fused Automatic Emergency Braking Test Report
Pedestrian automatic emergency braking (PAEB) testing performed by VSI Labs shows that their thermal-fused AEB test vehicle passed all FMVSS No. 127 tests conducted—day and night. Three leading 2024-model AEB systems also tested failed one or more of the night testing scenarios. Based on the test results and underlying perception system data, thermal cameras are essential for effective nighttime pedestrian detection. They provide advanced warning to extend braking distances, improved detection and false-positive performance, and more comfortable and safer deceleration.

Automatic Emergency Braking Fused with Thermal Can Save Lives
Existing AEB systems are powered by radar and visible cameras and none feature a thermal imaging camera. In our tests, we showed that Teledyne FLIR thermal cameras and the Research Vehicle consistently stopped safely in challenging conditions.

Thermal Cameras and Automatic Emergency Braking

Testing Automatic Emergency Braking with FLIR Thermal Cameras
Three test cases were conducted in both daylight and darkness, giving six datasets and 35 total test runs using an adult Euro NCAP Pedestrian Target (EPTa). Test results were promising. In all runs for all six test cases, the AEB system successfully brought the VUT to a stop before reaching the EPTa.

Creating Safer Roads of Tomorrow
Drive with clarity, even in the most challenging road conditions. Not one technology alone can create safer roads of tomorrow, but with the power of 3 sensor suites, achieve the impossible with thermal imaging.
